Keeping A Blue Pool During Monsoon Season

Well it’s that time a year again. The evening horizon is dark grey and the storms are on the move. Monsoon season can do a real number on your pool. The rain, with contaminates from the pollution, the wind blowing dust and debris into your swimming pool, can turn a blue pool green in a matter of a day or two. But don’t worry, I got a couple of tips that should help minimize the effects once the storm has passed. Start by checking the skimmer and pump baskets to make sure they are empty and free of debris. Then turn on your pump and look at the pressure on your swimming pool’s filter to make sure it is within the normal operating range for that filter. If it’s not it needs to be cleaned. For a sand or D.E. filter you can backwash it to clean it out, just don’t forget on a D.E. filter that after backwashing it you need to replace the D.E. that lines the grids. If it’s a cartridge filter then it needs to be taken apart and the cartridges need to be cleaned thoroughly. If you’re not sure how to do this simply call your local pool professional (like us) and schedule them to come out and clean it as soon as possible. Once you have good circulation you need to check those chemicals. Storms put all kinds of things in your swimming pool that affect your chemical levels. Make sure the chlorine levels are between 1 and 3 parts per million (if you have some shock or liquid chlorine around you may need to use it) and that the PH level is between 7.2 and 7.8. Lastly, do a quick skim of the surface if needed and make sure your swimming pool cleaner is functioning properly and cleaning up any debris and dirt that has settled to the bottom. If you don’t have a pool cleaner, you really need to ask yourself why not. I cannot stress enough the importance of a quality pool cleaner enough, even if you have a weekly pool service. Remember that water and electricity do not mix so don’t turn on your pool during the storm if possible. Safety is way more important than a green pool. I hope this helps keep your pools blue and good times rolling.
